The presentation will examine the challenges associated with certifying a novel technology in the maritime domain, taking into account flag administration and IMO codes and standards, classification society rules and rigorous safety concepts. Against the backdrop of a wing-in-ground-effect vehicle, the presentation will consider alternative approaches to generally accepted maritime standards, and also take a deeper dive into two specific examples that could apply to many new maritime technologies being developed. The audience will also hear about secondary but equally important considerations, such as insurance and insurability, and the need to link certification and risk.
