Decarbonizing shipping is an urgent priority, yet the economic case for adopting e-fuels remains weak. However, there is a zero-emission solution that can offer superior financial returns compared to traditional fossil fuels under current EU GHG regulations. Ro-pax vessels are well suited for battery propulsion, including larger ships. While electrification introduces new technical challenges, it also enables the development of leaner and more cost-efficient vessels. The principal hurdle remains providing sufficient charging infrastructure in ports. This presentation will showcase two ro-pax concepts and their respective technical solutions as well as business cases, demonstrating the practical and economic feasibility of this solution.
