Day 2 Room 3 Ports and Infrastructure
The Nexigen plan at the Port of Barcelona is a transformative initiative aimed at decarbonizing port operations and improving air quality. Key aspects include the implementation of OPS systems to connect ships to the port's electrical grid while at berth, using clean energy from renewable sources. Emissions Reduction aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% by 2030, with a goal to be a carbon-neutral port by 2050. Investment by the Port of Barcelona is €110 million in the project, with €90 million allocated for OPS systems and the remaining €20 million for infrastructure. Nexigen Plan is holistic focusing on electrifying various vessel types, including container and ferry ships, and will be a model for scalable decarbonization initiatives in ports across Europe. This initiative is a significant step towards aligning the Port of Barcelona with the EU Green Deal targets and enhancing sustainability in maritime activities.
