Day 2 Room 1 Electrification & Hybridization
Thermal runaway is an unavoidable failure mode in lithium-based marine energy storage systems. Although modern battery designs significantly reduce the likelihood of failure, the industry has largely accepted that when thermal runaway occurs, escalation into a vessel-level emergency is inevitable. This presentation challenges that assumption. Drawing on Echandia’s system-level integration of a latent, automatic safety layer, the talk shows how thermal runaway can be managed as a controllable engineering event rather than an asset-threatening catastrophe. By separating failure prevention from consequence control and intervening early to prevent the risk.
