Automation and Autonomy
Day 2 Room 2 Automation and Autonomy
Maritime technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace. Autonomous systems, AI-driven decision support, advanced simulation and digital twins are redefining operations. Yet incidents, inefficiencies and near misses increasingly stem not from technical failure but from human overload, misinterpretation and cognitive bias. This talk explores the widening gap between technological capability and human readiness. Drawing from real-world ship operations, pilotage and simulator-based training, it highlights why future maritime safety and performance will depend less on smarter machines and more on designing technology around human cognition, behavior and decision-making. The future is not autonomous ships; it is augmented humans at sea.
